Every child who passes through Zambia's justice system has a story. These are some of those stories — anonymised to protect privacy, but real in every meaningful way.
These stories represent the work of Local Child Justice Forums, social welfare officers, magistrates, legal aid lawyers, and all partner institutions across Zambia. Behind every statistic is a child whose life was changed.
A 14-year-old from Ndola caught stealing food from a market stall. Instead of prosecution, the diversion programme connected him with a mentor and vocational skills training.
A 16-year-old girl from Lusaka's Kanyama compound, charged with assault following a violent domestic situation at home. The child-friendly court process gave her a voice.
A 15-year-old from Chipata, first-time offence. Legal Aid lawyer assigned through the CJF network ensured proper due process and the child remained in school throughout.
A 13-year-old from Livingstone arrested for being out after curfew. The social welfare officer identified severe family poverty and referred the family to social services.
